Spotlight on our Innovation in Residence: SafeBangle

SafeBangle is part of the 40+ innovations that RIL Uganda has supported in the past 4 years. SafeBangle has been incubated by RIL in 2020-2022 to strengthen their solution for reporting Sexual and Gender-based Violence.   More than 1 in 5 women aged 15-49 (22%) in the world report having experienced sexual violence. Many instances go unreported and oftentimes women do not receive assistance while experiencing assault. The SafeBangle Team is developing a wearable safety bracelet that can be used by the would-be victims of assaults, SGBV, and other forms of injustice to call their trusted relatives and loved ones for help. The team is placing a special emphasis on affordability and ensuring that their solution does not require internet connectivity or ownership of a smartphone.   RIL has been offering mentorship and capacity strengthening, helping the team access new partnerships and resources. Read about their experience here and about their work – they are currently developing prototype 5.
