Care and Empowerment of the Vulnerable in Action (CAEVA)

Community-workshop approach for youth in Jinja

CAEVA’s innovation was the creation of a community workshop (CW). The CW targets vulnerable but skilled youths who lost their livelihoods following the outbreak of COVID-19. The CW innovation is a two-dimensional solution to the challenge of losing livelihoods: firstly, tools are hired out to the youths to work from outside the workshop, and thereafter return the tools to the workshop; secondly, the innovation avails workspace for rent (sit and work using tools/equipment in the CW) on a daily basis, until a time when the youths (re)gain capacity through saving to resume their previous livelihoods or diversify into other income-generating activities. The skilled youths charge their clients upfront payment, part of which is used to hire tools from the CW or to rent space within the CW to work and deliver on orders placed by their clients.
